Kalpavas

Kalpavas is a spiritual retreat and a significant event. The term itself refers to those pilgrims who stay and participate in the ritual for the entire duration of the Kumbh Mela.

It begins from the Ekadashi of the Paush Purnima and lasts up to Maghi Ekadashi. In 2025, this period starts from January 13, 2025, and lasts up to February 12, 2025. The whole period is considered very holy and believed to be beneficial spiritually.

The Kalpavas event is a part of the larger Kumbh Mela, which includes several important bathing festivals. In 2025, these include:

Paush Purnima on January 13

Makar Sankranti Shahi Snan on January 14

Mauni Amavasya bathing festival on January 29

Basant Panchami Shahi Snan on February 3

Achala Saptami bathing on February 4

Maghi Purnima snan on February 12

Devotees engage in many religious practices during this time such as bathing in the holy river, meditating, performing rituals, and listening to discourses from spiritual leaders. They camp on the banks of Sangam in tents to live a simple life. They get the opportunity for self-reflection, devotion, and awakening of knowledge.

According to the ‘Padma Purana’, a Kalpvasi has to observe 21 rules through mind, speech, and action. After completion of Kalpavas Vrata, one is honoured as ‘Kalpavasi’. They represent the retired forest life called Vanaprastha Dharma.

Overall, it offers a transformative experience for enlightenment and spiritual growth seekers.
